Pass an expanded smoking policy to address cigarette litter in Laguna Beach, CA.
On May 23, 2017, the Laguna Beach City Council passed an expanded policy to address cigarette litter. The policy expands a smoking ban already in place for beaches and parks. It now bans smoking throughout the city, including on sidewalks, bike paths, alleys and in parking structures. The South Orange County Chapter advocated in support of the expanded policy in collaboration with the American Lung Association. The victory benefits the environment, as cigarette butts account for approximately one in every five items collected during beach cleanups. Media coverage included a news story from the OC Register.
